Deutsch DT vs DTM vs DTP: Picking the Right Sealed Connector

Spend any time around off-road equipment, boats, or industrial machines and you will run into Deutsch connectors. The DT series and its two siblings, DTM and DTP, are everywhere for good reasons, which is why "which one do I actually need" is one of the questions we hear most. The answer usually comes down to three things: contact size, current, and how many ways you need.

What all three families share

DT, DTM, and DTP are environmentally sealed thermoplastic connectors, IP68-class when properly assembled. All three retain their contacts with wedgelocks and accept stamped or solid contacts, and all three are staples in automotive, off-road, marine, and industrial builds. Stamped and solid contacts are both available across the range, so the housing decision and the contact decision can be made independently. Pick any of the three families and you get the same basic recipe; the differences are in scale.

Deutsch DT: the general-purpose workhorse

The DT series uses size 16 contacts, good for around 13 A typical per contact, in housings from 2 to 12 ways. It covers the broad middle of harness work, and when someone says "a Deutsch connector" with no qualifier, this is usually the one they mean. If you have no strong reason to go smaller or bigger, start here.

Deutsch DTM: compact and signal

The DTM series steps down to size 20 contacts at around 7.5 A typical, also in 2 to 12 ways. Where it earns its keep is space: sensor runs, signal wiring, board-level connections, and packaging that a full-size DT will not squeeze into.

Deutsch DTP: built for power

The DTP series goes the other direction: size 12 contacts, around 25 A typical, in 2 to 4 ways. This is the family for power feeds and high-current circuits, where a size 16 contact would be working too hard.

These are typical published ratings, and they assume the connector is properly assembled: the right contacts on the right wire, wedgelocks fully seated, seals intact. Real-world capacity depends on wire gauge, ambient temperature, and how many circuits are loaded at once, so leave yourself margin rather than designing right up to the number.

Picking in practice

Work through it in order. Current first: if a circuit needs serious amperage, that points at DTP before anything else gets a vote. Space second: if the harness lives somewhere cramped and the loads are modest, DTM keeps the package small. Everything else lands on DT.

And mixing families on one harness is completely normal. A DTP for the power feed and a couple of DTMs for the sensors is an everyday combination here, not a compromise.

Way count deserves a moment too. Housings come in fixed sizes, so when a circuit count lands just above a size break, decide early whether to split circuits across two connectors or step up to the next housing. And if the design is still growing, a spare way or two is cheap insurance now and a headache to add later.
